Rough Surface: Desert

[2019]

Rough Surface: Desert — artwork by Francisco Alarcón (FAR)

Part of the Rough Surface series, this installation explores water generated with computer graphics as an object of study. The work examines the digital materiality of simulated water surfaces, questioning representation and reality in computational environments.

Rough Surface: Desert is part of the ongoing Rough Surface series, an artistic investigation into water generated with computer graphics as an object of study.

This installation continues FAR's exploration of digital materiality, examining how computational processes simulate and represent natural phenomena. The work questions the boundary between physical and virtual water surfaces, using algorithmic generation to create meditative visual experiences.

The Rough Surface series includes multiple iterations: the original Rough Surface installation at Harvard's Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts, and Rough Surface 2.0 at Boston University. Each iteration expands upon the conceptual framework while adapting to its unique architectural and institutional context.
